Indian Wells
Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) Angelique Kerber def. (7) Samantha Stosur walkover (leg)
We hadn’t had as many players on the women’s side have physical troubles as on the men’s, but it was bound to happen eventually, right? Angelique Kerber had already clinched the #6 ranking, but this dramatically improves her changes of keeping the spot after Miami. Samantha Stosur remains stuck at #9.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) Caroline Wozniacki def. (1) Victoria Azarenka walkover (ankle)
This is a joke, right? Or are we dreaming? What a day…. It’s the second time this year Victoria Azarenka has bailed on a match, although she has been tough to beat when she has played…. For Caroline Wozniacki, this means that one more win would take her past Stosur to the #9 ranking. But Azarenka, last year’s champion, will fall to #3 if Maria Sharapova can make the final.
Doubles – Semifinal: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Hsieh/Peng 6-2 6-2
Petrova/Srebotnik seem to go from strength to strength. It looks as if Katarina Srebotnik will probably be returning to the Top Ten.
Doubles – Semifinal: (4) Makarova/Vesnina def. Date-Krumm/Dellacqua 4-6 7-6(7-4) 10-8
Elena Vesnina is good at reaching the final here — she did it last year also. Now she simply has to win a big one….
