Indian Wells
Late Wednesday
The following matches were completed after our previous edition went out.
Singles – Fourth Round: (1) N Djokovic def. (23) S Querrey 6-0 7-6(8-6)
Sam Querrey came into this match by reminding himself that he had beaten Novak Djokovic before. Unfortunately, Djokovic seemed to remember it, too — and made sure that he showed no mercy. After all, he has been on fire since that loss…. Querrey will be the #1 American, but he will be ranked no better than #20 — and Kevin Anderson could still, theoretically, overtake him.
Singles – Fourth Round: (3) A Murray def. C Berlocq 7-6(7-4) 6-4
Andy Murray seemed distracted in this match, perhaps by Carlos Berlocq’s grunting, but he managed to hold together — perhaps better than Roger Federer, who was struggling through at about the same time. The contest for #2 stays hot.
Singles – Fourth Round: (5) R Nadal def. (Q) E Gulbis 4-6 6-4 7-5
Rafael Nadal keeps up his quest to regain the #4 ranking — and sets up a meeting with Federer. Think that will pull in the audiences?
Singles – Fourth Round: (7) J Del Potro def. (19) T Haas 6-1 6-2
Tommy Haas added a fair number of points, but he’ll have to settle for the #18 ranking, just one spot above where he came in.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Huey/Janowicz def. (WC) Blake/Fish 7-5 6-2
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Peya/Soares def. Fleming/Hanley 6-3 4-6 10-5
Early Matches
Singles – Fourth Round: (2) R Federer def. (18) S Wawrinka 6-3 6-7(4-7) 7-5
Roger Federer’s back is a little bit off, and it perhaps affected him slightly; he had a bad first couple of games before taking charge. Then, as he was on the verge of winning the match, he lost control again, and Stanislas Wawrinka won the second set. Federer struggled through the third, too, but he leaves his countryman still near the bottom of the Top Twenty. Federer’s own fate remains in the air; Andy Murray could still take the #2 ranking from him here.
Singles – Fourth Round: (6) T Berdych def. (10) R Gasquet 6-1 7-5
Once again Richard Gasquet loses any chance to rise above #10. Tomas Berdych again stays ahead of Juan Martin del Potro in the contest for #6.
Singles – Fourth Round: (8) J Tsonga def. (17) M Raonic 4-6 7-5 6-4
So very, very close for Milos Raonic, but he loses his chance to reach the Top Fifteen.
Singles – Fourth Round: K Anderson def. (13) G Simon 6-3 1-6 6-4
Kevin Anderson must want a Miami seed. He’s put himself back into the Top Thirty (meaning that Mikhail Youzhny is out). This leaves Gilles Simon still at #13 — which in turn clinches that Richard Gasquet will stay Top Ten.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: S Gonzalez/Lipsky def. Dodig/Melo 4-6 6-3 10-5
