After winning one round in California, Mardy Fish is not celebrating his return to tennis after six months out with a heart condition. In fact, the American has yet to make his playing schedule after the Miami Masters starting next week.
Fish was quietly pleased after getting past compatriot and qualifier Bobby Reynolds in an opening match at the Indian Wells Masters. The American who has been bothered over the past year or more by an accelerated heartbeat admitted he’s been wrestling with doubts and “demons” as he ponders whether he can carry on in the game,
Right now, the 31-year-old ranked 32nd is keeping his blinders on. “I haven’t looked at my draw. Someone just told me who I play the winner of. That’s when I found out who I play next (fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga).
“Sometimes you just adds stress to your life that you don’t need. This is already a pretty stressful business. You try not to read too much and you try not to watch too much. Just kind of stay as comfortable as possible and watch basketball this week instead of tennis a little bit more.
“I’m just trying to sort of limit my surroundings as far as getting in tough situations, getting in different situations.”
One of the Fish secrets: an early bedtime. “A lot of it has to deal with going to bed early. Practice has been tough because I sometimes feel like I’m pushing myself too hard. If I do take a step back, then it would take me a week to get back from that just to climb back to where I was before. ©Daily tennis news wire
