Indian Wells – Late Friday
The following matches were completed after our previous edition went out.
Singles – First Round: B Phau def. A Falla 7-6(7-1) 6-2
A big upset — Bjorn Phau’s ranking was more than double Alejandro Falla’s. Even with the win, Phau remained below #100.
Singles – First Round: F Fognini def. A Bedene 6-4 6-3
Fabio Fognini missed Indian Wells last year (and also Miami), so just showing up was a bonus for him. Winning this match is likely to take him to #35 or higher.
Singles – First Round: M Llodra def. (Q) D Munoz-De La Nava 7-5 6-3
Michael Llodra defends his points; another win might get him to around #60.
Singles – First Round: (Q) B Reynolds def. B Becker 6-3 3-6 6-4
Bobby Reynolds picks up his first ATP win since Estoril 2012.
Singles – First Round: Y Lu def. (WC) T Smyczek 2-6 6-2 6-2
Tim Smyczek came here just below the Top Hundred; had he won this, he probably would have made it. As it is, we would guess he’ll come up a little short. And, given how much he likes playing in California, this was a big chance lost.
Singles – First Round: D Gimeno-Traver def. L Lacko 6-1 6-4
After starting the year with back-to-back quarterfinals, Lukas Lacko is really struggling; he has now lost three in a row.
Doubles – First Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Cilic/Erlich 6-2 7-5
Doubles – First Round: Dimitrov/Nielsen def. (6) Qureshi/Rojer 7-5 7-5
Doubles – First Round: Kubot/Tipsarevic def. Bopanna/Ram 6-4 7-6(7-4)
Doubles – First Round: Dodig/Melo def. Monaco/Zeballos 6-3 6-6(6-8) 10-3
Already covered:
Singles – First Round: (Q) M Ebden def. A Kuznetsov 6-3 4-6 6-4
Matthew Ebden pushes a little closer to the Top Hundred, although this won’t get him there.
Singles – First Round: A Ramos def. H Zeballos 6-3 6-3
We would guess Horacio Zeballos will stay Top Forty, but not with much margin to spare; he is really struggling to follow up his first title.
Singles – First Round: C Berlocq def. S Giraldo 6-0 2-6 7-5
A very slight upset — Carlos Berlocq was the lower-ranked of these two by three places. But both have been sliding; this was a guaranteed slump-buster for somebody.
Singles – First Round: (Q) P Petzschner def. (Q) D Tursunov 6-4 6-4
After two fine weeks, Dmitry Tursunov’s momentum stalls, but he has done well enough that he won’t have to play too many more qualifying matches this year.
Singles – First Round: N Davydenko def. P Mathieu 7-6(7-1) 6-2
Two more wins and Nikolay Davydenko might return to the Top Forty.
Singles – First Round: (Q) I Karlovic def. (WC) J Sock 3-6 7-6(10-8) 6-2
Interestingly, Ivo Karlovic had only twelve aces in this match. And Jack Sock won five more points than Karlovic. But Karlovic got the job done. He will need a lot more to return to the Top Hundred, though.
Singles – First Round: M Matosevic def. (WC) T Robredo 7-5 6-2
Marinko Matosevic is close to a return to the Top Fifty, although this won’t do it by itself.
Singles – First Round: E Donskoy def. T Ito 6-2 6-1
This is the first Masters win for Evgeny Donskoy.
Singles – First Round: P Andujar def. (WC) S Johnson 2-6 6-1 6-4
An important start for Pablo Andujar, who will need at least one more win to stay Top Fifty.
Singles – First Round: (WC) J Blake def. R Haase 6-3 6-4
Robin Haase will remain near the bottom of the Top Fifty.
Doubles – First Round: Isner/Querrey def. Ferrer/Robredo 6-3 6-4
Isner/Querrey were a very strong doubles team until they both cut back on doubles. The fact that they’re playing and doing well may be a promising sign — John Isner needs to get some kinks out.
