Indian Wells

Friday (so far)

Singles – First Round: (Q) M Ebden def. A Kuznetsov 6-3 4-6 6-4

Matthew Ebden pushes a little closer to the Top Hundred, although this won’t get him there.

Singles – First Round: A Ramos def. H Zeballos 6-3 6-3

We would guess Horacio Zeballos will stay Top Forty, but not with much margin to spare; he is really struggling to follow up his first title.

Singles – First Round: C Berlocq def. S Giraldo 6-0 2-6 7-5

A very slight upset — Carlos Berlocq was the lower-ranked of these two by three places. But both have been sliding; this was a guaranteed slump-buster for somebody.

Singles – First Round: (Q) P Petzschner def. (Q) D Tursunov 6-4 6-4

After two fine weeks, Dmitry Tursunov’s momentum stalls, but he has done well enough that he won’t have to play too many more qualifying matches this year.

Singles – First Round: N Davydenko def. P Mathieu 7-6(7-1) 6-2

Two more wins and Nikolay Davydenko might return to the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: (Q) I Karlovic def. (WC) J Sock 3-6 7-6(10-8) 6-2

Interestingly, Ivo Karlovic had only twelve aces in this match. And Jack Sock won five more points than Karlovic. But Karlovic got the job done. He will need a lot more to return to the Top Hundred, though.

Singles – First Round: M Matosevic def. (WC) T Robredo 7-5 6-2

Marinko Matosevic is close to a return to the Top Fifty, although this won’t do it by itself.

Singles – First Round: E Donskoy def. T Ito 6-2 6-1

This is the first Masters win for Evgeny Donskoy.

Singles – First Round: P Andujar def. (WC) S Johnson 2-6 6-1 6-4

An important start for Pablo Andujar, who will need at least one more win to stay Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: (WC) J Blake def. R Haase 6-3 6-4

Robin Haase will remain near the bottom of the Top Fifty.

Doubles – First Round: Isner/Querrey def. Ferrer/Robredo 6-3 6-4

Isner/Querrey were a very strong doubles team until they both cut back on doubles. The fact that they’re playing and doing well may be a promising sign — John Isner needs to get some kinks out.
