Indian Wells, CA – The past few days Roger Federer has been enjoying his time in the desert with fun practices and a good demeanor. It’s a stark contrast for Federer compared to the start of the 2012 BNP Paribas Open where players left and right were downed by a flu-like illness (Federer and members of his family caught the bug themselves, before going on to win the title). Today, he gave his pre-tournament press conference and answered a multitude of questions regarding the tour and life.
First off, an ever pleasant Federer greeted the media before answering questions about his career’s longevity. It seems to have come to that time these days and the legendary Bud Collins wondered if Federer could match the likes of Ken Rosewall in the age-defying endeavor of continuing to play competitively. Federer was not alarmed by the question but says he is, “Enjoying the process.”
He talked further about the state of his health and mentioned he had no aches or pains during the off-season and felt he played well in Australia. He also added that he didn’t suffer any aches or pains or lack of motivation even after his South American exhibition tour.
To what does Federer credit his sustained health to? He’s Swiss! He believes in moderation and balance. He won’t cut out certain foods like certain players but realizes there’s a delicate timing to things. Whether it’s when to eat or when to sleep, Federer believes both are integral to a player’s success on tour, especially with all the jet lag.
A new topic to the conversation with the top 4 has been the introduction of the ITF’s Biological Passport. While some players are offering simple answers, Federer is passionate about his opinion, claiming, “We must insure and make sure that the sport stays clean.”
