(So Far)

Singles – First Round: Anabel Medina Garrigues def. Casey Dellacqua 6-1 6-3

Casey Dellacqua will remain below the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Mallory Burdette def. Jill Craybas 6-3 6-1

It seems almost a disservice to give Jill Craybas a wildcard, these days. She is ranked below #200, and her WTA record since the start of 2012 is 3-8, with piles of qualifying losses. She hasn’t won a main draw match since Bad Gastein last June. We have to suspect she’s spending more getting to tournaments than she can earn playing there.

Singles – First Round: Simona Halep def. Lauren Davis 6-2 6-0

Simona Halep needs one more win to defend her points, but we’d guess this will keep her above #60.

Singles – First Round: Shahar Peer def. Marina Erakovic 6-3 6-4

That’s the best news for Shahar Peer in quite a while, but she remains below #100 — by a lot.

Singles – First Round: Svetlana Kuznetsova def. Andrea Hlavackova 6-3 6-1

Svetlana Kuznetsova still needs one more win to defend her points, so there is still a slight chance she might fall out of the Top Fifty. But her next opponent, Jelena Jankovic, had better watch out….

Singles – First Round: Chanelle Scheepers def. Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-1

This is an upset based on current rankings. Kristina Mladenovic loses her chance to clinch a Top Fifty spot.

Singles – First Round: Johanna Larsson def. Timea Babos 6-7(5-7) 6-2 6-0

Timea Babos can’t seem to find her game; she will remain below #100, and won’t be getting many more main draw entries unless she turns things around soon.

Singles – First Round: Olga Govortsova def. Mandy Minella 6-2 3-6 6-4

After a modest breakthrough last year, Mandy Minella is really struggling this year. She may not be Top Hundred much longer.

Singles – First Round: Ksenia Pervak def. Jie Zheng 6-1 6-2

Zheng Jie made the third round last year, so it appears her ranking is going to take another hit.

Singles – First Round: Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino def. Sesil Karatantcheva 6-4 1-6 6-3

This was the match that overflowed the scorebox, given the players’ long names and the three set score. Sesil Karatantcheva’s ranking will remain larger than she likes, too; this means she will stay stuck well below #100.

Singles – First Round: Silvia Soler-Espinosa def. Vania King 6-7(7-9) 6-2 6-1

Vania King remains below the Top Hundred. She can’t seem to stay healthy long enough to get her game back.

Singles – First Round: Lesia Tsurenko def. Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-2

Lesia Tsurenko has been climbing steadily, so this isn’t really much of an upset, even though Tsurenko had to come through qualifying. It very likely means no Top Fifty spot for Ayumi Morita.

Singles – First Round: Maria Sanchez def. Olga Puchkova 6-3 6-3

Olga Puchkova had a long plane flight to get here, then two qualifying matches in one day, plus jet lag. Little wonder she ran out of steam….

Singles – First Round: Lourdes Dominguez Lino def. Grace Min 1-6 6-4 6-3

Lourdes Dominguez Lino didn’t have to play qualifying, plus she has been at this for about as long as Grace Min has been alive, so she knows all the tricks. Even so, she had quite the scare…. Dominguez Lino needs one more win to defend her points, two more to hit the Top Fifty.

Doubles – First Round: Goerges/Shvedova def. Grandin/Uhlirova 6-2 7-6(7-1)

Interesting that Vania King is here but not playing with Yaroslava Shvedova. Not a bad start for Goerges/Shvedova, though; Grandin/Uhlirova are a pretty good team.

Doubles – First Round: Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni def. Birnerova/Cibulkova 6-2 6-2

Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni ought to be a pretty good team — Jankovic can get to anything, and Lucic-Baroni can blast it away. On the other hand, neither has had much doubles success (Lucic’s Australian Open title with Martina Hingis obviously excepted, but that was with Hingis…). So we didn’t have much clue what to expect here.

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
