Roger Federer has been a committed user of Wilson rackets ever since emerging on the world tennis scene as a highly talented teenager 15 years ago. Consequently one of his first tasks after arriving in California’s Coachella Valley to defend the BNP Paribas Open title he won for the fourth time a year ago, was to shoot some television commercials to celebrate Wilson Tennis’ 100th anniversary that falls in 2014.
Wilson remains high in the lucrative Federer portfolio of endorsements alongside Nike, Rolex, Mercedes, Lindt Chocolate and several other prominent manufacturers and the 31 year-old’s off-court earning power is still estimated by Forbes Magazine to be in excess of $US45 million a year.
So there was no hardship for the Swiss in doing the film shoot so soon after completing the long journey from the Middle East where he lost Friday’s Dubai Duty Free Championships semifinal to Tomas Berdych.
“I’ve been with Wilson my whole life,” Federer said. “It’s who I grew up with. They’ve always been my racquet. It’s nice doing a commercial together and promoting the brand. It’s fun doing it here in the desert. It’s a different location than in a studio somewhere in front of a green screen.”
In a full day of filming at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort in Palm Desert, Federer completed a series of commercials Tuesday. In the last, Wilson’s Junior Tennis Team joined him for an impressive piece of footage entitled “A Whole New Generation.”
One of the team, 15 year-old Bryce Pereira who is one of Southern California’s leading prospects said: “I’m really honored to be here to meet Roger Federer and represent Wilson. I model my game after him. Watching him on the court is like watching the perfect player.”
Jon Muir, Wilson’s general manager for racket sports, was pleased with the day’s work and enthused: “We’re setting the stage for the future and the next 100 years. Somewhere in that mix is going to be the next Roger Federer.”
