The La Quinta Resort, only a few miles from Indian Wells and the Masters 1000 venue, will become the first local retail outlet to stock and sell Maria Sharapova’s line of candies launched last summer. The Sugarpova sweets will be on sale from next week at the pro shop, with the tennis icon set to attend the local product launch in person for an autograph signing, according to local media.
La Quinta Resort, once the home of the Masters, has a close connection with tennis in the Palm Springs area.
With former Davis Cup coach Tom Gorman the tennis boss around the grounds, it didn’t take much to forge an arrangement between the sweets line and the popular resort, which features more than 20 courts and has been used for low-key training sessions by major players anxious to avoid the spotlight at the ever-expanding Masters site.
The Sugarpova offerings at the first retail outlet in the desert area to carry the range will include “Sporty,” a tennis ball-shaped gum which is expected to be the major fan favorite. Also for sale: Flirty Sours (“Lips like sugar…”) and Chic gummies shaped like tiny handbags and shoes.
