Sport and its’ megastars such as Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong and Oscar Pistorius have been involved in controversy that has moved from the sports pages of newspapers to the front. Now Novak Djokovic believes it is time to redress the balance.
The 25 year-old tennis world no.1 insists he never loses sight of the support he receives at every tournament and believes it is imperative for the leading stars of every code ensure they interact with fans.
“They’re the ones who are giving you support, sometimes unconditional love and support,” said Djokovic. “It’s incredible. I have been looking at the videos and all the messages and support that I have been getting the last few years. It’s breathtaking what they are making for me. How much dedication and passion they have for what I do.
“I try to give something in return obviously through my performance on the court and off the court, as well. You know, you try your best because they are the ones who carry you on, who give you wins.”
Djokovic maintained his 100% record on the ATP World Tour in 2013 by moving through to the Dubai Duty Free Championships semifinal and he maintained, regardless of the fact that some tournaments are more important than others, he still plays to win in every match he plays.
“Sport is one of the purest ways of living,” said the Serb. “I think it teaches you a great deal of commitment, dedication, great socialization, love and passion. Hard work really pays off in the end.
“You can’t really cheat in sport. You need to be committed all your life in a sport like tennis, which is very demanding. It’s an individual sport, it’s all on you. You lose or you win.
“I feel that tennis at the moment is probably one of the best eras in the history of the sport and gaining more fans around the world because it’s a beautiful game to watch.”
