Toni Nadal has disputed Spanish media reports which say that his nephew will be heading home after this week on clay in Acapulco and will not risk his fragile knees on hardcourt at Indian Wells and Miami.
The coach and uncle of Rafael Nadal said that any decision will only be made after the No. 5 ends his run in Acapulco. Organizers at a big-pay exhibition next week in New York on indoor hard insist that Nadal will front up for their event to face Juan Del Potro.
Toni Nadal said nothing has been decided as his nephew struggles to make an impact again in tennis after missing seven months with his chronic knee problems. “There is a decision (to be made), Rafa ended quite well in Sao Paulo after winning the title in Brazil. It’s now a matter of seeing about the knee.”
The senior Nadal admitted that he has concerns about his nephew’s physical shape when it comes to punishing cement play. “We have to be wary when Rafael plays on hard courts. But he has been (feeling) really well in Acapulco. At no time have I said it has been decided not to play on the US hardcourts.
Nadal himself has been talking up his recovery, telling Mexican media he feels “physically fit in general” though the knee recovery is slow going. “The knee is better some days and worse other days, but the most important is that it seems that everything is on track. The goal is that every week we have a higher percentage of good days.”
