Gorgeous Gussy Moran Passes Away

It’s January 16,2013. Gertrude Augusta Moran of Santa Monica , California has gone to the big grass tennis court in the sky. Most of her life she was known as Gussy Moran. Most misspell it as Gussie but she always preferred Gussy with the “y”. Many friends called her Gus. She was a dear woman. Brilliant. Witty. Charming . Elegant . Complicated. Independent.and Indigent. Yes. Indigent. She had a roof over her head but she lived very simply. There was never any extra money. [READ MORE].

“Gorgeous Gussy Our Lady of Lourdes” By Hilary McGuire

I had already taught 2 full years at Our Lady of Lourdes in East Los Angeles. One of my math, literature and creative writing students was a particularly receptive Philip Gutierrez, a US District Judge in LA since 2007. Philip was also prominent in my after school tennis program. During the second of those two years I had founded and had a 6-4 season with the Cantwell High School men’s team in nearby Montebello, CA. Remembering Gussy Moran – By: Philip Gutierrez

Last week I learned that Gussy Moran passed away. I read articles about her life. The stories chronicled her professional achievements, strong personality, financial challenges, Wimbledon, and of course her beauty. With each story, I emailed friends and law clerks about her. I asked everyone “Have you heard of Gussy Moran?” They all said no. [READ MORE].

Vergeer Announces Her Retirement

Esther Vergeer has today announced her retirement from wheelchair tennis bringing an end to the most illustrious career the sport has ever seen.

The 31-year-old Dutch star, who celebrated ten years without a defeat on the international wheelchair tennis circuit on 30 January, has been the face of her sport for more than a decade.

Vergeer started to play wheelchair tennis at the age of 12 after surgery on her spinal cord went wrong. Her dominance of wheelchair tennis started when she became world No. 1 for the first time in 1999. She has been named ITF Wheelchair World Champion for the last 13 years, winning 169 titles and ends her career on a winning streak of 470 matches, with her last defeat coming against Australian Daniela di Toro in Sydney on 30 January 2003. From Tilden to Federer – Mulloy’s Grand Slam Life

On New Year’s Day I had the honor and pleasure of a phone interview with tennis Hall of Famer, Gardnar Mulloy, who turned 99 years young this past November 22. (10sballs.com wishes him a belated but very Happy Birthday!)

Tall, athletic and movie-star handsome, Mulloy richly deserves the word “honor” because of his achievements on and off the tennis court. This includes being a decorated Lt. Commander in the Navy during WW2, surviving the bloody invasions at Anzio, Salerno and Normandy.

And I use the word “pleasure” because, even a year shy of a century, Gardnar’s full of humor. A prime example is an event in 1950, right before Wimbledon. [READ MORE].
