Contrary to the four leading names in men’s tennis, newly reinstalled women’s no.1 Serena Williams maintains she is drug tested on a more than regular basis.
Williams, whose chances of winning the ongoing Dubai Duty Free Championships for the first time in her career were enhanced by yesterday’s withdrawal Victoria Azarenka, agrees with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray who want more blood testing and biological passports to be introduced in top-flight tennis.
But Williams insisted: “I don’t know how they work it out but I’ve done drugs test a lot – all the time. I don’t see anyone else on the tour do as much. Maybe they [the authorities] Drug put all their money into drug testing me.”
Williams called for all her rivals on the WTA, along with the men on the ATP World Tour, to be subjected to such stringent observation. “I find that I am the only one getting drug tested so often,” she emphasized. “I really don’t know why. Maybe they should branch out a bit.”
The player who on Monday became the oldest ever world no.1 since rankings were introduced in 1975, maintains she is regularly tested both in and out of competition and was even visited by doping officials while on vacation.
Williams revealed she was in Mauritius at the end of last year, with her coach and companion Patrick Mouratoglou along with several other players from his French academy, when drug testers arrived unannounced. “Mauritius is really far I can tell you,” she said. “I guess they spend all the money buying tickets to come to where I travel!”
