Rotterdam
Singles – First Round: (1) R Federer def. G Zemlja 6-3 6-1
A good start for Roger Federer — but, with the points he still has to defend this week, he’s more than 3000 points behind Novak Djokovic. It’s going to be quite a while before he has another shot at #1.
Singles – First Round: (4) R Gasquet def. V Troicki 7-6(7-3) 6-1
Viktor Troicki’s slide continues; this will drop him out of the Top Forty.
Singles – First Round: (Q) M Bachinger def. (6) A Seppi 6-3 6-4
Andreas Seppi won’t rise above #18, and there are several players in San Jose who could pass him.
Singles – First Round: M Baghdatis def. B Paire 6-0 6-7(3-7) 4-0 retired (Illness)
No new high for Benoit Paire this week. This has the looks of a plague event….
Singles – Second Round: (5) G Simon def. (Q) M Viola 6-3 6-1
Gilles Simon has a good shot at the #13 ranking this week, but if he wants to get to #12, he needs a title.
Singles – Second Round: J Benneteau def. V Hanescu 6-1 6-3
Julien Benneteau defends his points; he should stay above #40.
Singles – Second Round: G Dimitrov def. N Davydenko 7-5 6-3
This should put Grigor Dimitrov in the Top Forty. It will certainly knock Nikolay Davydenko out of it; he was defending semifinalist points. We show him at #43 in safe points, with a real danger he will go lower.
Doubles – First Round: Fleming/Marray def. Fransen/Koolhof 4-6 6-1 10-2
No, we’ve never heard of Fransen/Koolhof either. They got the places of Nestor/Youzhny, who had to pull out due to Youzhny’s hip injury.
Doubles – First Round: Janowicz/Nieminen def. Huey/Inglot 6-4 7-5
Janowicz/Nieminen are also replacements — in this case, for del Potro/Llodra; Michael Llodra was sick. At least, this time, they found a pair of real replacements….
Doubles – First Round: (WC) Bakker/Huta Galung def. (WC) Haase/Sijsling 2-6 6-3 10-3
Sao Paulo
The Story So Far:
G Pella def. (6) F Fognini 7-6(8-6) 1-6 6-1. No Top Forty spot for Fognini.
(Q) P Capdeville def. H Zeballos 6-7(6-7) 6-0 3-0, retired. A lousy way to follow up a first title. Zeballos will remain below the Top Forty.
San Jose
The Story So Far:
B Becker def. R Harrison 6-7(3-7) 7-5 6-3. Harrison was a semifinalist last year, so he’ll be falling below #60.
