Novak Djokovic has been putting in the hard work on a tennis court lately, retaining the Australian Open title and leading Serbia to an impressive win over Belgium on an inhospitable clay court in Cherleroi. So the world no.1 took time off to donate $US 65,000 towards a kids playground in Belgrade.
Dedicating some of his valuable time to his own charity foundation, Djokovic, along with his mother Dijana and girlfriend Jelena Ristic visited the Anton Skala elementary school.
Djokovic has long put great importance on supporting Serbian children and he said: “The donation will enable kids to play joyously and learn in a better environment. The idea behind the realization of the ‘Anton Skala’ school yard project is to enable children to play in the park with their friends in a safe environment.
“So far, they have not been able to do so because the school yard was deserted, and there were no funds to complete the project. With our help, no later than springtime, children will be able to enjoy and socialize not only with their school friends but also with the children from the neighborhood.”
Djokovic toured the school yard with principal Igor Raicevic and teachers. In keeping with his extrovert manner, he even danced with the students.
The next couple of weeks will be spent resting and recuperating before returning to the match courts at the Dubai Duty Free Championships which begin on February 25.
