Montpellier
Singles – First Round: (6) J Benneteau def. A Ungur 6-3 4-2, retired (leg)
Adrian Ungur just regained his Top Hundred spot, but it is likely that this will drop him back out.
Singles – First Round: (7) V Troicki def. L Pouille 6-4 7-5
This won’t do Viktor Troicki any good, but he has fallen far enough that even one more win will count.
Singles – First Round: M Llodra def. K de Schepper 6-3 6-3
Kenny De Schepper is getting close to the Top Hundred, but this means he will have to wait at least one more week.
Singles – First Round: T Ito def. E Roger-Vasselin 3-6 7-6(7-5) 7-5
Eduard Roger-Vasselin’s Top Hundred place is also in some danger.
Singles – First Round: A Brugues-Davi def. M Kukushkin 6-7(5-7) 6-3 7-6(7-3)
This may be a Davis Cup artifact, since Mikhail Kukushkin had to cover several time zones from Kazakhstan. Of course, there is also the fact that he’s in a pretty bad slump.
Singles – Second Round: J Nieminen def. (5) N Davydenko 6-3 7-6(10-8)
The top spot in this draw is starting to look jinxed. First Tomas Berdych pulled out. So Nikolay Davydenko was promoted into the spot. Now Davydenko is out, which just might cost him a ranking spot or two. And this ends almost a ten year undefeated streak for him against Nieminen; Nieminen’s last win against the Russian was at Rome 2003!
Singles – Second Round: (8) B Paire def. S Darcis 4-6 7-6(13-11) 6-4
Lucky for Benoit Paire, perhaps, that Steve Darcis was in Davis Cup. A few more points for Darcis and this might have gone the other way; Darcis had a match point. As it is, Paire is two wins from the Top Forty.
Doubles – First Round: (3) Huey/Inglot def. Ratiwatana/Ratiwatana 6-3 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Serra/Simon def. Cerretani/Shamasdin 7-6(7-2) 7-6(9-7)
Zagreb
Singles – First Round: (6) M Baghdatis def. T Kamke 6-7(6-8) 6-2 6-4
Considering that Tobias Kamke had played Davis Cup in Argentina, little surprise that he ran out of gas here. A tough bit of scheduling for him.
Singles – First Round: F Cipolla def. (8) L Lacko 1-1, retired (Lower Back)
Lukas Lacko was last year’s finalist. Those points are already off, so he won’t fall any more — but he won’t rise, obviously.
Singles – First Round: R Haase def. (WC) A Veic 2-6 6-3 6-3
Croats seem to do amazingly well in Zagreb, but in this case, the talent gap was just a little too much.
Singles – First Round: I Dodig def. B Becker 6-2 7-6(7-3)
Ivan Dodig, however, performed quite well, especially considering that he had a busy weekend in Davis Cup.
Singles – Second Round: (3) M Youzhny def. I Sijsling 6-3 6-2
From now on, the points count for Mikhail Youzhny, but he probably needs a final to make it back to the Top Thirty.
Doubles – First Round: (2) Knowle/Polasek def. (WC) Androic/Marcan 3-6 6-1 10-4
Doubles – First Round: Becker/Rosol def. (3) S Gonzalez/Lipsky 6-4 3-6 10-6
Tomas Berdych pulled out of Zagreb after the Great Davis Cup Doubles Match, but not Lukas Rosol. Looks like he knew what he was doing, too.
Doubles – First Round: (4) Melzer/Petzschner def. Elgin/Zelenay 6-7(3-7) 6-4 10-4
Good to see Jurgen Melzer manage a win after his Davis Cup disaster.
Doubles – First Round: Marx/Mergea def. Cilic/Draganja 6-3 6-3
Doubles – First Round: (Alt) Cipolla/Devvarman def. (WC) Delic/Skugor 6-4 6-2
Doubles – First Round: (Alt) Bedene/Pospisil def. Karlovic/Moser 7-6(9-7) 7-6(7-2)
Vina del Mar
