Singles – Second Round: (1) Sara Errani def. Magdalena Rybarikova 4-0, retired
That’s one way for Sara Errani to avoid the effects of jet lag: Face an opponent more beaten up than she is. Not that it matters; Errani won’t move in the rankings this week.
Singles – Second Round: Kiki Bertens (LL) def. (4) Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 6-4
Kiki Bertens is definitely making the most of this opportunity…. Dominika Cibulkova had a first round bye, so she earns no points; it looks as if she will fall to #15.
Singles – Second Round: (6/WC) Lucie Safarova def. Alize Cornet 6-2 4-6 6-2
Alize Cornet will likely remain right at her current #35.
Singles – Second Round: Carla Suarez Navarro def. (8) Klara Zakopalova 6-4 6-3
Not a big surprise, given how well Carla Suarez Navarro has started the year. She looks likely to hit the Top Thirty. Klara Zakopalova will not rise above #24.
Singles – Second Round: Kristina Mladenovic def. Yanina Wickmayer 6-4 6-4
Yanina Wickmayer loses what should have been an easy Top Twenty chance; she will not rise above her current #22.

Singles – First Round: Ayumi Morita def. (1) Ana Ivanovic 6-3 5-7 6-3
This had started on Tuesday, and Ana Ivanovic was already in trouble. The fact that she struggled on two different days makes us wonder how seriously she took this event. Luckily for her, the players chasing her didn’t do much better.
Singles – First Round: (6/WC) Daniela Hantuchova def. Olga Puchkova 6-1 3-6 6-0
Not a great start, considering that Daniela Hantuchova was the defending champion and was already a day behind….
Singles – First Round: (7) Elena Vesnina def. Eleni Daniilidou 6-2 5-7 6-2
The rain delay definitely hurt Elena Vesnina here: She was cruising on Tuesday, but came back and needed most of a set to get back into things. And she had another match to play….
Singles – Second Round: (2) Maria Kirilenko def. (WC) Luksika Kumkhum 5-7 6-2 6-2
Even with the loss, we’d call this more evidence that Luksika Kumkhum is promising — she kept Maria Kirilenko out there for almost two and a half hours. The good news for Kirilenko is that this appears to be enough points to take her to #14.
Singles – Second Round: (4) Sorana Cirstea def. Anastasia Rodionova 6-0 7-6(7-3)
From now on, the points count for Sorana Cirstea. If she can win her next match, she’ll guarantee her Top Thirty ranking.
Singles – Second Round: (5) Sabine Lisicki def. Alexandra Panova 7-5 6-2
This effectively guarantees that Sabine Lisicki will return to the Top Fifty — and she has a big chance ahead of her, since she is the only seed left in the top half. Alexandra Panova may not be Top Hundred much longer at this rate.
Singles – Second Round: Nina Bratchikova def. (6) Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 3-0, retired
For now, this doesn’t cost Daniela Hantuchova. But her title here comes off next week. After that, she can expect to fall below #60, and she shows no signs of coming out of her funk.
Singles – Second Round: (7) Elena Vesnina def. Mathilde Johansson 6-2 3-6 6-1
If nothing else, Elena Vesnina’s stamina is impressive. She played most of five sets on Thursday. She will probably rise to #32 as a result.
Singles – Second Round: Anastasija Sevastova def. (8) Heather Watson 7-6(7-4) 4-6 6-2
Another slight hint that Anastasija Sevastova is back in her pre-injury form. She leaves Heather Watson still around #40.
Singles – Second Round: Ayumi Morita def. Kimiko Date-Krumm 4-6 6-4 6-1
Ayumi Morita is now up to around #55.
Singles – Second Round: Marina Erakovic def. Varatchaya Wongteanchai 6-3 7-6(7-4)
This was, in a way, the reward Marina Erakovic gets for beating #3 seed Hsieh Su-Wei in the first round: An almost guaranteed second round win.
Doubles – First Round: (1) Chang/King def. Lertpitaksinchai/Plipuech 7-6(7-3) 6-3
Doubles – First Round: (4) Mattek-Sands/Peer def. Hsieh/Liu 6-4 6-1
