Australian Open
Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) R Federer def. (7) J Tsonga 7-6(7-4) 4-6 7-6(7-4) 3-6 6-3
This makes ten straight Australian Open semifinals for Roger Federer, although it certainly wasn’t easy! It’s a good thing he has a day off. Even so, it seems likely that he’ll be at a distinct handicap in the semifinal. Still, his #2 ranking is safe. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga again loses the chance to rise above #8.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) A Murray def. J Chardy 6-4 6-1 6-2
Not much to say about this match except that it happened. And it means that the top four seeds — Djokovic, Federer, Murray, Ferrer — are in the semifinal. And Murray’s chances for the final definitely look good, although making it won’t help him; he is stuck at #3. Jeremy Chardy appears to be at #25.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Bracciali/Dlouhy 6-3 7-5
This is one of Lukas Dlouhy’s better recent showings, but the Bryans obviously want to strengthen their grip on the top spots. They have clinched the #1 and #2 rankings, but not by much; every win will extend their lead over Marc Lopez. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) BryanM………….9140
2..(2) BryanB………….9070
3..(6) LopezM………….7510
4..(5) Nestor………….6540
5.(10) Granollers………6500
6..(7) Mirnyi………….6100
7..(3) Paes……………5435
8..(8) Tecau…………..5370
8..(9) Lindstedt……….5370
10..(4) Stepanek………..5305
Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: Peschke/Matkowski def. Hsieh/Bopanna 6-2 6-3
Mixed rankings would have seeded Peschke/Matkowski, so no surprise here.
Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: Shvedova/Istomin def. Llagostera Vives/Marrero 6-4 7-5
These two teams were right next to each other in the Mixed rankings; little surprise it was close.
