Australian Open
Singles – Semifinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (4) D Ferrer 6-2 6-2 6-1
There really isn’t much to say about it. Even with Novak Djokovic on one side of the net, it took only an hour and a half. David Ferrer will be the new #4 player in the world, and he deserves it — but he’s like a sideshow in a three ring circus. He gets the attention only after the other three shows are over….
Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Bolelli/Fognini 6-4 4-6 6-1
The Bryans haven’t exactly been making life easy for themselves here, but they’re still around long after most of the seeds were out; they have defended their points.
Doubles – Semifinal: Haase/Sijsling def. (3) Granollers/M Lopez 7-5 6-4
The Bryans may have struggled in the semifinal, but they will be overwhelming favorites in the final. And overwhelming leaders in the contest for #1. Marc Lopez may be #3, but he will be at least 2000 points behind the Bryans. Marcel Granollers will be #5, another thousand points back. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) BryanM………….9620
2..(2) BryanB………….9550
3..(6) LopezM………….7510
4..(5) Nestor………….6540
5.(10) Granollers………6500
6..(7) Mirnyi………….6100
7..(3) Paes……………5435
8..(8) Tecau…………..5370
8..(9) Lindstedt……….5370
10..(4) Stepanek………..5305
Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Mirza/B Bryan def. Hradecka/Cermak 7-5 6-4
There was a time when Sania Mirza was perhaps the #1 female Mixed player in the world. That faded as her singles career has faded. But maybe she is getting it back.
Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: Gajdosova/Ebden def. (5) Petrova/Bhupathi 6-3 3-6 13-11 (Match TB)
Australians aren’t doing anything in singles these days, but with Barty/Dellacqua in the women’s doubles final, and now this, their doubles seems to be in good shape! And this isn’t quite as big a surprise as it looks; mixed rankings would have dropped Petrova/Bhupathi to unseeded. Gajdosova/Ebden would have been even lower on the list, but stronger than their ordinary doubles rankings would imply. And clearly going higher.
