Andy Murray readily admits he never touches alcohol and for the most part maintains a diet tailored to help rather than hinder his tennis. But the US Open champion has moved into the restaurant world with a £1.8million deal to secure the Cromlix House country hotel near Dunblane in Scotland.
Now Murray, whose bid is believed to have beaten the top ranked French gastronomic doubles team Michel and Albert Roux, intends to turn the hotel into one of Scotland’s most prestigious dining venues.
The 25 year-old’s agreement to buy the sprawling Victorian mansion was conditional on a successful seven-day-a-week drinks license application. Final legal papers are expected to be signed by early February.
Cromlix House Hotel is situated just a couple of miles from the Murray family home and Jamie, the doubles playing elder brother of the world no.3, held his wedding with Colombian bride Alejandra Gutierrez there in 2010.
The four-star hotel, complete with 14 bedrooms, sits in 36 acres of landscaped grounds within a 2,000-acre estate and includes four fishing lochs and two mineral springs. It has been closed for business since last February but is a prime site as it’s only a ten minutes helicopter ride from Gleneagles golf course, venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
Keeping things in the family, Murray is likely to appoint his mother Judy to the board of the company he’s formed to run the hotel. Not that she has a surfeit of time, as Britain’s Fed Cup captain and the woman tasked with seeing the resurgence of British female tennis, spearheaded by Laura Robson and Heather, continues to improve.
Murray’s financial adviser, Neil Grainger, said: “As soon as all the contracts that have been agreed are in place, including the company who will be managing the property, Mr Murray’s management company will be making a full announcement.”
