Australian Open

Singles – Third Round: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. Jamie Hampton 6-4 4-6 6-2
This was really quite impressive for Jamie Hampton, who for two sets was matching Victoria Azarenka for pace. But Hampton started having physical problems in the third. And so she will remain below #60. For now.

Singles – Third Round: (3) Serena Williams def. Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-3
The bagel parade seems to be over, but the victories by top players aren’t. Serena Williams now has a magic number of not more than three — three wins or one loss each by Azarenka and Sharapova — to achieve the #1 ranking.

Singles – Third Round: (10) Caroline Wozniacki def. Lesia Tsurenko 6-4 6-3
One more win will let Caroline Wozniacki stay Top Ten.

Singles – Third Round: (14) Maria Kirilenko def. (20) Yanina Wickmayer 7-6(7-4) 6-3
Maria Kirilenko keeps alive her Top Fifteen hopes — given the next result, she looks pretty secure. Yanina Wickmayer was #20 when this ended, but the evening was young….

Singles – Third Round: Elena Vesnina def. (16) Roberta Vinci 4-6 7-6(7-4) 6-4
The Elena Vesnina surprises continue. This means that Roberta Vinci will not be making the Top Fifteen. But Vesnina is up to probably #33, and has won eight straight matches.

Singles – Third Round: (29) Sloane Stephens def. Laura Robson 7-5 6-3
There will be no Top Twenty spot for Yanina Wickmayer after all. Sloane Stephens is now in that spot. If she can win one more match, she will pass Varvara Lepchenko to become the #2 American. Laura Robson falls a little short of the Top Forty.

Singles – Third Round: Bojana Jovanovski def. Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-2 7-6(7-3)
It appears Bojana Jovanovski will hit the Top Forty.

Singles – Third Round: Svetlana Kuznetsova def. Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 4-6 6-3
This was an amazingly tough match, but it ends with Svetlana Kuznetsova again starting to add to her point total. This should take her above #70. Carla Suarez Navarro falls just short of the Top Thirty.

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Jurak/Marosi 6-1 7-6(7-3)
One more win and Nadia Petrova should rise to #3. Katarina Srebotnik may well return to the Top Fifteen. Here is how we show the Top Ten:
 1..(1) VINCI ............. 8950*
2..(2) ERRANI .............8950*
3..(3) HLAVACKOVA .........7340
4..(4) HRADECKA ...........7340
5..(5) PETROVA ........... 7310*
6..(7) KIRILENKO ......... 6430
7..(6) RAYMOND ........... 6405
8..(8) HUBER ............. 6290*
9..(9) VESNINA ........... 5490*
10.(10) LLAGOSTERA VIVES ...5330*

Doubles – Second Round: Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni def. (9) Groenefeld/Peschke walkover
Groenefeld and Peschke remain below the Top Fifteen.

Doubles – Second Round: (12) Williams/Williams def. Dushevina/Govortsova 6-1 6-2
No signes of trouble for Serena yet in either singles or doubles….

Doubles – Second Round: (13) Begu/Niculescu def. Panova/Voskoboeva 6-4 2-6 7-5

Doubles – Second Round: Black/Rodionova def. Aoyama/Falconi 6-4 6-4
Cara Black seems to be playing better now than before her maternity leave. This could genuinely make things interesting for the rest of the Tour.

Doubles – Second Round: Lepchenko/S Zheng def. Goerges/Stosur 7-5 3-6 7-5

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (2) Vesnina/Paes def. Arvidsson/Qureshi 6-7(6-8) 6-4 10-7 (Match TB)
Amazing how tough this was, considering that Mixed rankings would make Vesnina/Paes the top seeds.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (7) Hlavackova/Bracciali def. Dellacqua/Smith 7-6(7-3) 7-6(7-4)
Mixed seedings would have demoted Hlavackova/Bracciali, so perhaps the closeness of this match is less surprising.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Gajdosova/Ebden def. Lisicki/Nielsen 7-6(8-6) 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hsieh/Bopanna def. Barty/Sock 6-3 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Shvedova/Istomin def King/Melo 2-6 6-4 10-7 (Match TB)

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Spears/Lipski def. Kops-Jones/Huey 6-3 3-6 10-7 (Match TB)
This seemed to be the day for women’s doubles pairs to face each other in mixed, with Shvedova facing King and Spears facing Kops-Jones. Odd that both ended in 10-7 tiebreaks…
