Australian Open

Singles – Second Round: (2) R Federer def. N Davydenko 6-3 6-4 6-4
Roger Federer keeps alive his faint hope of reaching #1, leaving Nikolay Davydenko at the low end of the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (3) A Murray def. J Sousa 6-2 6-2 6-4
No hope of a rise for Andy Murray, but he’s certainly advancing with ease.

Singles – Second Round: (6) J Del Potro def. B Becker 6-2 6-4 6-2
Ease, in fact, seems to be the word of the day for high seeds. Juan Martin del Potro stays very close to Tomas Berdych in the contest for #6 — or even #5.

Singles – Second Round: (7) J Tsonga def. G Soeda 6-3 7-6(7-1) 6-3
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga isn’t likely to rise above #8 this week, but he is looking as if he could be a real threat to Roger Federer in the quarterfinal.

Singles – Second Round: (9) R Gasquet def. A Falla 6-3 6-2 6-2
Richard Gasquet needs one more win to defend his points, but his chances of staying Top Ten are looking better and better.

Singles – Second Round: (12) M Cilic def. (Q) R Ram 7-5 6-2 6-4
These are all free points for Marin Cilic, but he is still only #13 in safe points.

Singles – Second Round: (13) M Raonic def. L Rosol 7-6(7-2) 6-2 6-3
The Lukas Rosol “I don’t do second rounds” story continues….

Singles – Second Round: (14) G Simon def. J Levine 2-6 6-3 7-6(7-4) 6-2
Gilles Simon is now quite likely to return to the Top Fifteen.

Singles – Second Round: (17) P Kohlschreiber def. A Weintraub 6-2 7-6(7-4) 6-4
Philipp Kohlschreiber needs at one more win to defend his points, but between what he has earned here and all the players below him who have lost, his Top Twenty spot looks pretty safe.

Singles – Second Round: (21) A Seppi def. D Istomin 7-6(7-4) 5-7 6-7(3-7) 7-6(7-3) 6-2
Our first real struggle of the day, but it puts Andreas Seppi perhaps just one win from the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: R Berankis def. (25) F Mayer 6-2 6-3 6-1
Florian Mayer seems to be jinxed around here. Last year, he didn’t play; this year, he is out too soon. He loses his Top 25 chance as a result.

Singles – Second Round: J Chardy def. (30) M Granollers 6-3 3-6 6-1 6-2
Granollers becomes one of only two seeds upset — the lowest two seeds in action. That costs him his Top Thirty chance; he will fall at least two spots. One of those passing him is none other than Jeremy Chardy.

Singles – Second Round: B Tomic def. (Q) D Brands 6-7(4-7) 7-5 7-6(7-3) 7-6(10-8)
Bernard Tomic continues to look strong, but he has to beat Roger Federer if he is to defend his points and reach the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: G Monfils def. Y Lu 7-6(7-5) 4-6 0-6 6-1 8-6
Gael Monfils definitely seems intent on dispelling all those off-season rumors about retirement or the like.

Singles – Second Round: B Kavcic def. (WC) J Duckworth 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-7(3-7) 10-8
A very fortunate draw for Blaz Kavcic, but give him credit for taking advantage….

Singles – Second Round: I Dodig def. J Nieminen 6-3 6-7(4-7) 6-3 6-7(4-7) 6-1
And so Jarkko Nieminen will remain below the Top Fifty.

Doubles – First Round: Anderson/Erlich def. (2) Paes/Stepanek 6-3 7-5
This pretty dramatically changes the picture in the doubles rankings! Paes/Stepanek, the defending champions, came in at #3 and #4, but they will be dropping out of the Top Five. Stepanek might even lose his Top Ten spot. We currently estimate the Top Ten as follows:
 1..(1) BryanM.............8510
2..(2) BryanB.............8440
3..(6) LopezM.............6880
4..(5) Nestor.............6450
5..(7) Mirnyi.............6100
6.(10) Granollers.........5870
7..(3) Paes...............5435
8..(8) Tecau..............5370
8..(9) Lindstedt..........5370
10..(4) Stepanek...........5305

Doubles – First Round: (4) Mirnyi/Tecau def. Huey/Inglot 6-7(4-7) 7-6(10-8) 6-3
We probably won’t settle the Top Five for many more days, but Max Mirnyi’s chances are looking fairly good.

Doubles – First Round: Peers/Smith def. (8) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-4 6-7(2-7) 6-1
This will leave the Poles below the Top Fifteen.

Doubles – First Round: (9) Peya/Soares def. Melzer/Rochus 6-3 6-2
Jurgen Melzer will probably end up around #30.

Doubles – First Round: (11) Marrero/Verdasco def. Bautista Agut/F Lopez 7-6(7-0) retired – (Lopez – Stomach Muscle Strain)

Doubles – First Round: (16) Marray/Sa def. Lacko/Zelenay 4-6 7-5 7-6(7-5)

Doubles – First Round: Baghdatis/Dimitrov def. Ebden/Harrison 7-6(8-6) 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Hanescu/Klizan def. Begemann/Emmrich 6-3 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Barton/Millman def. Gimeno-Traver/Matosevic 3-6 6-4 7-5
Doubles – First Round: .Malisse/Norman def. Monroe/Zemlja 6-6(6-8) 6-2 7-6(8-6)

Doubles – First Round: Bellucci/Paire def. Kamke/Mayer 6-2 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin def. Elgin/Istomin 6-0 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Cabal/Farah def. Udomchoke/Wang 3-6 6-3 7-6(11-9)

Doubles – First Round: Stakhovsky/Youzhny def. Ratiwatana/Ratiwatana 6-7(5-7) 6-4 6-2

No Key Biscayne, No Problem; New Site, Same Great Miami Open Tennis Event

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
