Fifth seed Tomas Berdych is happy for the big names to take the heat as the Australian Open hits its stride. The low-key Czech who led his nation to the Davis Cup final over Spain last season, has moved unobtrusively into the second round and is quite keen to maintain his traditional low profile.
“Let’s leave all the pressure on them,” he said the Novak Djokovic, Roger Federers and Andy Murrays of this world. “Everybody’s talking how many Grand Slams this guy or that guy can win.
“You get so much pressure on the court, and you don’t have to have it around, as well. Those four guys (including the injured Rafael Nadal), they were able to win Grand Slams, many Grand Slams. So probably they deserve it (pressure) more than us so far.”
Berdych who has been a Melbourne quarter-finalist for the last two years, may not be a top title tip in the face of the big three competition – but the big hitter is not discounting his chances either.
“Today’s tennis is really, really strong. I think we were in the best era of our sport ever. That’s how it is. “It’s the same for everybody. I think we all try our best to break that huge barrier in front of us.”
