A record Kids Tennis Day crowd turned out at Melbourne Park today to launch Australian Open 2013.
The annual kids event featured world No.1s Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka alongside Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Ana Ivanovic and international music star Guy Sebastian on court for the Rod Laver Arena Spectacular, produced in association with Nickelodeon.
MLC Tennis Hot Shots Leader Craig Morris said the day was an “unbelievable success”.
“We are overwhelmed by the response to Kids Tennis Day at Australian Open 2013,” he said.
“Today is all about getting kids out onto the tennis court and we hope this event helps motivate kids and families to get involved in the sport.”
With Melbourne in the grip of tennis fever, families were out in force at Melbourne Park to participate in the on and off-court entertainment including a Celebrity Slam match between former world No. 1 Martina Hingis, Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith, former Australian Wallabies representative Stirling Mortlock and former AFL and NFL captain Ben Graham.
Former world No. 8 Alicia Molik kept a watchful eye on the next generation of stars, with MLC Tennis Hot Shots activities for kids of all ages on the world famous Melbourne Park courts.
Cartoon favourites SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Starfish, Dora the Explorer and Diego joined the entertainment line-up.
