Sydney

Singles – Semifinal: (1) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (4) Na Li 6-3 6-4

This was the match where a winning streak had to end. Agnieszka Radwanska had started the year with seven straight wins; Li Na had eight. Radwanska, of course, now has eight of her own. And a guaranteed ninth match to play, right before the Australian Open. And she hasn’t, and won’t, move above #4 even if she takes the title.

Singles – Semifinal: Dominika Cibulkova def. (2) Angelique Kerber 6-2 4-6 6-3

Sometimes it seems as if Dominika Cibulkova picks a new favorite surface each year. When she came up, she loved clay. In 2011, she became an indoor player. Now she’s in love with hardcourts. She is up to #14, and will be #13 if she wins the title.

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Jurak/Marosi 7-5 6-4

Doubles – Semifinal: Petrova/Srebotnik def. (2) Hlavackova/Hradecka 6-4 6-3

An interesting upset, this. Petrova and Srebotnik have both had very good results with other partners, and now they seem to be jelling together.

Hobart

Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) Sloane Stephens def. Lauren Davis 6-3 4-6 7-5

We show Sloane Stephens up to #25; a final would make her #22.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (9) Mona Barthel def. Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-3

At least Tsvetana Pironkova won her second round. A quarterfinal win was probably too much to ask…. Mona Barthel is still below the Top Forty in safe points, but one more win would let her stay there.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Elena Vesnina def. Jarmila Gajdosova 6-3 6-2

The big Elena Vesnina comeback continues. She leaves Jarmila Gajdosova still well below #100.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Kirsten Flipkens def. Monica Niculescu 2-6 6-4 6-0

Both these players have now worked their way back into the Top Fifty. Monica Niculescu will have to settle for probably #48; Kirsten Flipkens appears to be up to #43 and with the chance to go higher.
