Auckland

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) D Ferrer def. L Lacko 6-2 6-1

Maybe, after a pretty inconsistent start to the year, David Ferrer is finally kicking into form. He leaves Lukas Lacko still below #40.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) P Kohlschreiber def. X Malisse 7-6(8-6) 6-4

And so Philipp Kohlschreiber will stay the top German, because…

Singles – Quarterfinal: (WC) G Monfils def. (3) T Haas 3-6 7-5 6-3

…Tommy Haas loses his chance to add to his point total. Haas will not rise above his current #21. Monfils faces Ferrer next, which should be a real test of how far he has come back.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) S Querrey def. (Q) J Levine 6-4 7-6(7-5)

With the sad news that John Isner is out of the Australian Open, Sam Querrey will be the top American man in the Australian Open draw. This week, he would need a title to hit the Top Twenty, but he may have a better chance in Melbourne.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Fleming/Soares def. Becker/Melzer 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Brunstrom/Nielsen def. Janowicz/Ramos 6-2 6-4

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cermak/Mertinak def. Malisse/Moser 0-0 retired (Moser – Back)

Sydney

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) A Seppi def. (8) M Granollers 6-4 7-5

And so we have only one seed left. Marcel Granollers loses any hope of making the Top Thirty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: J Benneteau def. (Q) R Harrison 6-4 6-2

This must be one of Julien Benneteau’s favorite weeks of the year — after making a final last year, he’s back in the semifinal. That means that he still has points to defend — but this should be enough to keep him Top Forty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: K Anderson def. D Istomin 6-4 6-3

Denis Istomin, however, was defending semifinalist points; it appears he may lose his Top Fifty spot.

Singles – Quarterfinal: B Tomic def. J Nieminen 6-7(6-8) 6-4 6-2

At that, Istomin is better off than Jarkko Nieminen. Istomin is close to the Top Fifty still. Nieminen, last year’s champion, is far below it.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Mirnyi/Tecau def. Bhupathi/Nestor 6-3 6-4

Max Mirnyi apparently wants to beat every ex-partner in reach.
