Top American John Isner has pulled out of the Australian Open due to a bone bruise on his knee as player injuries mount in the run-up to the first major of 2013.

The No. 13 was forced to quit a match last week at the Hopman Cup as his prospects for fronting up for the first major of the season began to fade. Isner tried to play this week in Sydney and lost to Ryan Harrison in the first round.

He withdrew less than 24 hours later, joining a list at Sydney which also included Frenchman Gilles Simon while Janko Tipsarevic, Kei Nishikori and Juan Monaco pulled out of the AAMI event in Melbourne.

“I’m extremely disappointed to announce that I have to withdraw from the #AusOpen,” he said on a twitter feed. I have been feeling some discomfort in my knee and have recently learned that I have a bone bruise. Doctors have told me that continuing to play on the knee could result in a more serious injury.”
