The Retired Roddick Doesn’t Seem Retired

Retirement apparently is not what is once was, with Andy Roddick traveling to South America for a few well-paid exhibition hits with Juan Del Potro.

The matches will serve as the bulk of the Australian Open preparation for Argentine Del Potro, who will make his final tune-up next week at the AAMI eight-man exhibition at Melbourne’s Kooyong club.

Roddick retired on his 30th birthday last autumn amid the heat of the US Open. But it hardly marked the last sighting of him on a tennis court. In the interim he’s padded his bank balance with a few hit-and-giggle outings in between rounds of golf and serial feasting on once-forbidden foods.

No. 7 Del Potro actually sent Roddick into retirement with his win over the American in the Open fourth round. The South American repeated that act as he beat the retiree in the first of two exhibition matches in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

The pair next head to Buenos Aires for another go before Del Potro departs for Melbourne for the Kooyong event also featuring Milos Raonic, Juan Monaco and Janko Tipsarevic.
