Victoria Azarenka laid down a marker with the loss of just one game to reach the semi-finals of the Brisbane international, with the No. 1 telling rival Serena Williams: “come and get it” in the season ranking race.
Williams, seeded third, is the main threat to the supremacy of the Belarus Belter who currently tops the WTA list. Both women are playing in Brisbane in preparation for the January 14 start of the Australian Open.
Azarenka won Brisbane in 2009 and won the Open a year ago. Despite Williams and Maria Sharapova breathing down her neck in the rankings, it’s all the same to Azarenka.
“It honestly doesn’t matter what people say,” she said of the presumed Williams momentum. “You can turn this thing around many different ways, what matters is your own opinion and what you personally feel.
“I’m not the one who is making the rankings and I don’t have to defend them, I always let my racquet do my talking. I truly believe that women’s tennis is at the highest competition right now,” she said.
“We have a lot of girls on any given day who can win a title.”
