Given his travel schedule, Novak Djokovic isn’t very hands-on when it comes to running things at his restaurant in Serbia, but this week he denied reports he had bought up the entire world’s supply of donkey cheese.
Reports earlier this month said that Djokovic had bought up all the pricey cheese from the only farm that produces it in Serbia for about $500 per pound.
The donkey cheese factory is on a nature reserve 50 miles west of Belgrade and is said to have 130 donkeys which do not produce cheese at anywhere near the pace that an average dairy cow does.
Apparently it takes 25 liters of donkey milk to make one kilo of cheese, which is why it is so expensive. A 50-gram piece sells for $90 and is said to be delicious.
“It is not completely true that we have bought the whole supply of donkey cheese, even though it was the first time in my life I heard that donkey cheese existed,” Djokovic said.
“They came to our restaurant and offered co-operation, so that is all. We are now thinking and seeing what we can do with that, but it is not true that I already bought the whole supply. It is a very expensive one and it is good quality. I have heard that they milk donkeys but I was not sure if that was possible. It is such an interesting story.”
