The mystery of the competitive motivation – and even the whereabouts – of Frenchman Gael Monfils is growing after suspicions in Paris that the one-time ATP No. 7 might be ready to toss in his career.
Monfils has been through hell with knee and other injuries in 2012 and has cut off contact with his former coach as well as other on his team, French media report. There are some doubts that the Swiss-based Frenchman will actually front up for the Australian Open after not playing since mid-October in Stockholm.
Monfils now stands a distant 77th in the rankings. According to French sports bible LÉquipe, he has been unreachable for several days.
Former Monfils coach Patrick Chamagne, said that his one-time charge “is hiding but I would not be surprised if it was a return to hell,” an apparent reference to the mental anguish which may have gripped the 26-year-old former French Open semi-finalist.
A contrasting report is presented by agent Nicolas Lemperin, who assured that Monfils will be playing in Australia.
