Aussie tennis heroine Sam Stosur will be the holiday headliner for the Brisbane joint ATP-WTA event as the former US Open winner plays the New Year’s eve match as the 2013 tennis season gets underway with a celebration.
The No. 9 will have the honours on December 31: “It’s always fun to play at home, I look forward to celebrating the end of 2012 with my fans and welcoming in 2013. I also get a chance to play in front of my family and friends which doesn’t happen that often,” added the 2011 US Open winner.
Organizers promise a big night in Stosur’s native Queensland to celebrate the New Year, with live music from late afternoon at the Pat Rafter arena tournament site. Plenty of adult beverages are also sure to be available.
Stosur, 28, will be competing for the first time since receiving Newcombe Medal award this month as her country’s most outstanding player in 2012. ” “I’m really looking forward being a part of the Brisbane International draw; it will be great to meet some of my fans and find out first-hand who my opponents will be,” Stosur said.
The men’s side of the field will be highlighted by Andy Murray, the defending champion.
