This past weekend, during its meeting in New York, the USTA Board of Directors voted on and passed a resolution to “pause” proposed changes to the 2013 national junior competitive structure. This pause for further consideration reinforces a commitment that was made recently by USTA leaders during a meeting in Chicago to advocates representing groups opposed to these proposed changes.
During its 2011-12 term, the USTA’s Junior Competition Committee (JCC) was charged with proposing to the Association a revised national junior tournament competitive structure, which resulted in the proposed amendments to the USTA Regulations. Those amendments were then passed by the USTA Executive Committee on March 19, 2012.
Since that adoption, the USTA’s current President, Jon Vegosen and President-Elect, David A. Haggerty, have agreed that it is in the best interest of the Association and the sport of tennis to “pause” until 2014 the reduction of the Boys’ and Girls’ 18 and 16 USTA National Clay Court Championships and the reduction of USTA National Championships (hard courts) singles draw sizes from 192 to 128.
