All right, we’ll say it up front: Any news at this time about a player’s 2013 schedule is probably meaningless. Still, it can be pretty interesting. Roger Federer has posted his anticipated schedule for next year — and it doesn’t include Miami! He is listed as playing Indian Wells — and then nothing until Madrid and Rome. It is the only required event he is shown as missing. (For optional events, he has scheduled Rotterdam, Dubai, and Halle. Nothing else.)
The interesting point, it seems to us, is that he chose Indian Wells over Miami. The most likely reason is that Federer has to defend the title at Indian Wells — but if he hadn’t decided, no doubt Larry Ellison would have tried to persuade him….
