Champion golfer Rory McIlroy has named tennis girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki as a major key to his runaway success on the links in 2012. Wozniacki, the former WTA No. 1 who now stands tenth, must be hoping for a bit of the victory spark of what has sent her man to this month’s PGA Tour Player of the Year honors.
“Seeing how hard she works and how hard she practices and how dedicated she is, it definitely flipped a switch with me that I could be a little more like that,” said McIlroy, 23. “She’s definitely been a great influence on me.
“I’ve always felt like I’ve been dedicated to the game and I’ve practiced hard and I’ve worked at it. But I guess over the past 18 months, especially after winning the US Open, I sort of felt like I went to the next stage of my career.”
Wozniacki won just two titles in 2012 as her ranking slipped into the danger zone for an elite. She lifted six apiece in the previous two seasons when she finished atop the WTA year-end list.
