British tennis has many things at its disposal; the sport’s newest Grand Slam champion Andy Murray as a role model, the most traditionally successful tournament in Wimbledon, and one of the most wealthy national sporting bodies in the Lawn Tennis Association. But sunshine and extended good weather, particularly in the winter months, remains an impossibility.
So common sense has prevailed the LTA has gone back to an old partner and negotiated a multi-year deal with the La Manga Club, the award-winning luxury sports and leisure resort located in Murcia, Spain.
The three-year partnership will provide the LTA Performance team with the opportunity to train with small groups of players on excellent outdoor facilities all year.
With 28 floodlit outdoor courts (20 red clay, four hard court and another four artificial grass) La Manga’s Tennis Centre is revered as one of Europe’s finest outdoor facilities and is the focal point for many of the resort’s sporting activities.
In return, the LTA will support the resort, affected like so many other Spanish concerns by the downturn in the economy, with building their brand and development in the British market.
The LTA enjoyed a profitable partnership with the La Manga Club a decade ago and Leon Smith, the LTA’s Head of Men’s and Women’s Tennis, enthused: “We are delighted to re-establish a relationship with one of the premier tennis resorts on the continent.
“The La Manga Club perfectly understood the requirements of our players, particularly with regards to clay court play, and will offer excellent practice facilities during the entire year, including the off-season.”
