Maria Sharapova is targeting a return to the No. 1 ranking in 2013, with the Russian who stands second behind Victoria Azarenka on the WTA making that career vow prior to a weekend exhibition in Milan.
Sharapova, who completed her career Grand Slam matched set by winning the French Open in 2012, briefly topped the WTA list last spring after her Roland Garros triumph,
“The goal is always to shoot for top spot and that’s always where you want to be and stay,” said Sharapova, who played Serb Ana Ivanovic in the well-paid hit-and-giggle exercise in the northern Italian fashion city. Also participating were Italian players Sara Errani, losing finalist in Paris to Sharapova, and Roberta Vinci, who teamed with Errani to end the year as the top doubles team in the world.
“It’s one thing to reach the No. 1 ranking, another to keep it,” said Sharapova.
