The expected January comeback of Mardy Fish in New Zealand has been put on hold as the American continues to deal with the irregular heartbeat problems which have threatened his career for almost a year.

Officials at the ATP event in Auckland had to roll back on their announcement last week that the 30-year-old would make his comeback to tennis at the tournament, which begins January 7, the week before the Australian Open.

Instead, Reuters reported that Fish would also miss the Australian Open, with his agent insisting that his client was well on the road to recovery and training again. Fish last played at the US Open but withdrew with stress before a fourth-round meeting with Roger Federer.

Fish underwent a medical procedure to steady an accelerated heartbeat condition which first bothered him last February. The former top 10 player now stands 61st in the ATP rankings.
