Spain will overcome the absence of injured Rafael Nadal as the tennis powerhouse aims for a sixth Davis Cup title in 13 years during the weekend final in Prague against the Czech Republic. The nation need only look to past history when the same kind of gap was overcome in a defeat of Argentina in the 2008 final played in South America.

“If it has happened before, why can’t it happen again?” Spanish captain Alex Corretja told dpa. Added No. 2 singles player Nicolas Almagro, who will back up David Ferrer for the visitors: “We have not come this far to die on the bank of the river. We have swum a lot all through the year.”

Corrtetja, a Davis veteran during his playing days with 19 ties contested through 2003, called the weekend’s work in fast indoor hardcourt. “a very difficult, very complicated final.”

“We’re not going to win it with Ferrer alone. We assume the Czechs are favorites, they were born on this surface, they play perfect on it, but we’re convinced that we can win.”

Ferrer, who won two indoors titles in as many weeks last month in Valencia and the Paris Masters, is key to any Spanish success as Nadal continues recover from knee injuries after five months away from the game.

“It’s true that if David (Ferrer) can get us that point on the first day, that will bring a lot of calm to the team,” said Almagro, ranked 11th on the ATP.
