The newly extended ATP World Tour off season has allowed space for a new and lucrative exhibition event to be staged in Singapore on November 24-25 with US$520,000 on offer in the Clash of Continents.
Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic, this week competing in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London , will represent Europe . Japan ’s Kei Nishikori, forced to pull out of last week’s BNP Paribas Masters in Paris because of recurrent right ankle injury, will be the standard bearer of Asia . Mardy Fish, unable to play competitively since before the US Open with heart problems, was announced to play on behalf of the USA, however he is not playing in the event, and Argentina’s Juan Monaco makes up the field for South America.
The Clash of Continents is co-organized by Game Changer Sports Management Group (SMG) and the Singapore Tennis Association, with the ambition of elevating tennis in Asia and Singapore to new heights with increased participation and spectator interest.
Tournament representative Kenneth Low said: “Tennis is beginning to see a tremendous increase in the following of the sport in Asia with the rise of Asian and Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori leading the way. To have a unique tournament concept like the Clash of Continents, we strongly believe we can further develop and enhance the interest towards tennis in Asia and Singapore by keeping new and current tennis fans entertained.”
The event will be staged at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in a round robin format. In addition Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and China ’s Peng Shuai will play a womens match on Sunday, November 25. As part of the event’s support for Singapore ’s Vision2030, a Tennis Festival will be organized at the Kallang Tennis Centre.
