Challengers
The biggest event this week is the Pune Challenger, in India. It’s not very strong, though, particularly considering that it’s one of those Challengers so big that the WTA is treating it as a WTA event — although it does feature Andrea Petkovic as she tries to rebuild her ranking. They’re now halfway though the second round. #6 seed Petkovic won her first round but hasn’t yet played her second. Also awaiting their second round matches are #1 Nina Bratchikova, #2 Misaki Doi, and #5 Kimiko Date-Krumm. #3 Donna Vekic, #7 Elina Svitolina, and #8 Tamarine Tanasugarn are in the quarterfinal; the one seed to lose so far is #4 Eva Birnerova, who lost her second round 3-6 6-3 6-1 to Luksika Kumkhum.
This Week’s Movers — Women
Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.
Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)
Leader: Kristina Mladenovic — Moved 22 places, from #98 to #76.
Mladenovic won the week’s second-biggest event, the Taipei Challenger.
Runner-Up: TIE:
Eleni Daniilidou — Moved 11 places, from #111 to #100
Chang Kai-Chen — Moved 11 places, from #100 to #89
Chang made the Taipei final. Daniilidou made the final of the Barnstaple Challenger.
Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)
Leader: Mladenovic, cut ranking 22%
Runner-Up: Chang, 11%
Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)
Loser: Ayumi Morita — Dropped 12 places, from #75 to #87
Last year, Morita won the Taipei Challenger. It was smaller then, but it was still a title….
Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)
Loser: TIE
Yaroslava Shvedova, ranking increased 4 places, 16%, from #25 to #29
Morita, ranking increased 16%
Morita, again, failed to defend Taipei. Shvedova was a Taipei quarterfinalist, and somehow that made four spots’ worth of difference.
