$100,000 Donated to Mayor’s Relief Fund for Use Throughout New York City

Flushing Meadows, N.Y., November 7, 2012 – The USTA today announced donations of goods and money to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts totaling more than $400,000.

Clothing, bottled water and other beverages, and needed supplies such as shampoos and soap, were collected from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and the USTA’s White Plains corporate headquarters and loaded on 16 pallets for delivery to the hardest hit areas in Queens. The USTA is working with the Queens Economic Development Corporation to ensure these critical supplies reach those in need. The first supply delivery, which took place Saturday, November 3, reached residents of Rockaway, Queens. Daily deliveries of supplies have continued over the course of this week.

In addition to the $300,000 in critical supplies, the USTA is providing a $100,000 cash donation to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York. The Mayor’s Fund is accepting financial donations from organizations and individuals to support hurricane relief efforts. One hundred percent of donations are being dispersed to relief efforts and organizations. The City is currently identifying immediate aid needs, including food, water and hygiene supplies, as well as long-term relief and restoration efforts.

“New York is the US Open’s home, and we want to aid in the rapid recovery of the City, as well as help as many people as we can directly in our home Borough of Queens,” said USTA Chairman of the Board and President, Jon Vegosen.

“In the midst of devastation and a lack of basic necessities, the USTA has generously stepped in as a good neighbor with substantial and practical relief aid that will go a long way towards relieving the suffering and frustration of so many who have been hit hard by Hurricane Sandy,” said Queens Borough President Helen Marshall. “On behalf of all our residents, thank you.”
