Singles – Group B: (2) R Federer def. (8) J Tipsarevic 6-3 6-1
You’d never know, from this, that Roger Federer is tired, would you? It won’t help his ranking, but he keeps alive his hopes of regaining the #1 spot after the Australian Open. Janko Tipsarevic needs 500 more points to move above his current #9. It’s obviously still possible — but it won’t be easy, given that he is now last in Group B.
Singles – Group B: (4) D Ferrer def. (7) J del Potro 6-3 3-6 6-4
Poor David Ferrer is going to have the shortest off season of anyone, since he has to play Davis Cup after this. He must be really, really, tired. But he keeps winning — and edging closer to a year-end #4 ranking.
Doubles – Group A: (3) Paes/Stepanek def. (7) Qureshi/Rojer 6-4 7-5
Doubles – Group B: (8) Marray/Nielsen def. (5) Bhupathi/Bopanna 6-4 6-7(1-7) 12-10 (Match TB)
The Paes/Stepanek result is no great surprise. But this is shocking — Marray/Nielsen really don’t deserve to be here; they simply were this year’s freak Wimbledon winners. The obvious conclusion is that the two teams involved in the Paris final (Bhupathi/Bopanna and Qureshi/Rojer) just didn’t have enough rest and preparation time.
