Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) D Ferrer def. (6) J Tsonga 6-2 7-5

Once again David Ferrer shows his indoor abilities. He’s the only seed left here. This looks like a very big chance for him to clinch his year-end #5.

Singles – Quarterfinal: G Simon def. (5) T Berdych 6-4 6-4

And the craziness keeps coming! Tomas Berdych should stay #6, but this is a real blow to his chances of ending the year in the Top Five. Gilles Simon is still at #16, but a final would take him all the way to #13.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (Q) J Janowicz def. (8) J Tipsarevic 3-6 6-1 4-1, retired

One day after finally qualifying for London, Janko Tipsarevic goes down. We may have a rather troubled batch of players at the Championships. Meanwhile, Jerzy Janowicz is moving fast. He had been rising steadily, but this will really speed things up. #69 coming in, we show him up to probably #35.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (WC) M Llodra def. S Querrey 7-6(7-4) 6-3

We had wondered, earlier this year, if Michael Llodra had enough left to continue as a singles player. This seems to answer that question! He increases his points by about 75%, and will rise from #121 to probably just above #50. Sam Querrey falls just short of the Top Twenty — we show him ending the year at #22.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Qureshi/Rojer def. (2) Mirnyi/Nestor 6-3 6-4

Not the greatest omen for Mirnyi/Nestor. On the other hand, they hadn’t the motivation of Qureshi/Rojer, who potentially needed this win to stay in the Race. In fact, by winning, they actually clinched, because Fyrstenberg/Matkowski were to face Bhupathi/Bopanna.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (5) Bhupathi/Bopanna def. (4) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-7(5-7) 6-3 10-4 (Match TB)

There is something slightly pitiful about the ATP Race coming down to a Match Tiebreak, but that’s what the situation was. One team had to win, and the winning team would end up ahead of the loser in the Race, and that was that. The qualifiers are as follows:

1..Bryan/Bryan…………. 9495..CLINCHED

2..Mirnyi/Nestor……….. 6675..CLINCHED

3..Paes/Stepanek……….. 6265..CLINCHED

4..Lindstedt/Tecau……… 5975..CLINCHED

5..Granollers/M Lopez…….4360..CLINCHED

6..Qureshi/Rojer……….. 3875..CLINCHED

7..Bhupathi/Bopanna………3815..CLINCHED

8..Fyrstenberg/Matkowski… 3690..OUT

9..Fleming/Hutchins………2420..OUT

10..Marrero/Verdasco………2260..OUT

11..Marray/Nielsen………..2180..CLINCHED

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cilic/Melo def. (8) Peya/Soares 4-6 6-4 10-7 (Match TB)

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Hanley/Marray def. (WC) Ouanna/Renavand 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-5)

No Key Biscayne, No Problem; New Site, Same Great Miami Open Tennis Event

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
