Thomas Johansson’s brief tenure as coach to Caroline Wozniacki has come to an end with the former world no.1’s father Piotr once again assuming complete control as his daughter attempts to reclaim a place in the world’s top ten.
Former Australian Open champion Johansson, a neighbor in Monte Carlo, was employed in the wake of Wozniacki’s French Open exit after she had slid from first to ninth place in the world rankings in a matter of five months.
Earlier in the year Spaniard Roberto Sanchez was relieved of his coaching duties with the Danish blonde, just two months after being hired. At the time Piotr Wozniacki maintained Sanchez did not understand the family dynamics of the situation.
Now Johansson, who recently was preoccupied with his job of tournament director of the IF Stockholm Open, which ran October 15-21, has met with the same fate.
The story broke on the Polish website Super Express with Piotr Wozniacki saying: “I gave up the job for a while and it went bad. Now I’m the head coach again.
“Now we’re going back to the old system, which brought Caroline to the top. I don’t care what the (experts) say. That she can’t hit winners and can only run. We will play as we play, and then slowly improve what we have done well.”
Piotr was then quoted in the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet: “It was Caroline’s decision. She wants to return to the set up with me as head coach and support from Adidas [Player Development]. We both know what needs to be done.
“We did not fire Thomas. We only had an agreement to US Open. He is still our friend and neighbor [In Monaco] and we hope to be able to practice with him in Monaco and benefit from his tactical inputs.”
Johansson was reluctant to be quoted until personally speaking with father and daughter Wozniacki who are currently in Sofia where she is contesting the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions and yesterday beat Italy’s Roberta Vinci.
“I would have appreciated a call instead of learning this from the media,” Johannson told Ekstra Bladet. “But I have known the family for a long time, and I am pleased to see Caroline doing well. I will always support her.”
