Round Robin – Group Serdika: (1) Caroline Wozniacki def. (5) Hsieh Su-Wei 6-2 6-2
A solid start for Caroline Wozniacki, who really does seem to be coming to life — but it isn’t enough points to count for her, let alone budge her ranking.
Round Robin – Group Serdika: (4) Roberta Vinci def. (7) Daniela Hantuchova 6-1 6-2
Nothing that matters yet for Roberta Vinci, either. But she is actually #1 in her group, ahead of Caroline Wozniacki in games won. Which means that Daniela Hantuchova is dead last. It’s going to be hard for her to win any tiebreaks with that games score on her record.
Round Robin – Group Sredets: (8/WC) Tsvetana Pironkova def. (6) Zheng Jie 2-6 6-4 7-6(7-4)
This obviously gives the locals something to cheer about — and Tsvetana Pironkova has a small enough sixteenth event score that this could actually matter, although not much by itself.
Taipei Challenger
We finally saw a non-Asian player beat an Asian here; #2 seed Olga Govortsova beat Zheng Saisai 7-6(7-3) 6-1 — although she needs a semifinal here to add any points. Also, #4 seed Kristina Mladenovic beat Julia Glushko in three sets, plus Paula Kania beat Chan Chin-Wei. But most of the players in action were from around the Pacific Rim, including #3 seed Ayumi Morita, #5 Chang Kai-Chen, and #7 Misaki Doi; they all won. Indeed, every seed in action won.
