Top seed David Ferrer reached the Valencia Open 500 final for the fourth time on Saturday as he finished strongly to defeat Croatian qualifier Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1. The Spaniard broke serve four times from nine opportunities as he prevailed in two hours and 42 minutes.

The 30-year-old Ferrer is looking to win his hometown tournament for the third time after victories in 2008 (d. Almagro) and 2010 (d. Granollers). He also finished runner-up in 2005 (l. to Andreev). Ferrer is also hoping to reach the doubles final with countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero, who is playing in his last tournament.

Ferrer, who is part of the eight-man field at the upcoming Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, is chasing his sixth ATP World Tour title of the season; only Ferrer, Novak Djokovic (five) and Roger Federer (six) have won at least five titles in 2012. The right-hander has compiled a 66-14 match record.

In the final, Ferrer will face Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, who dismissed Austria’s Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-2. The No. 21-ranked Dolgopolov reached the fifth ATP World Tour final of his career as he converted all four of his break points to claim victory in 74 minutes. He has only lost serve once in 37 games this week.

The 23-year-old Dolgopolov won his second ATP World Tour title at the Citi Open in Washington D.C., in August (d. Haas) and was also runner-up to Andy Murray at the Brisbane International at the start of the season.
