Vienna champion Juan del Potro has tuned the race to the final three spots in the season-ending ATP event next month into a sprint as the Argentine clings to his provisional seventh standing for the eight-man event.
The top seed beat Slovenian qualifier Grega Zemlja 7-5, 6-3. He flew straight to Basel to play as second seed at the Swiss Indoors behind home hero Roger Federer. With just two more weeks remaining in the regular season ATP campaign, the chase to London is game-on.
“I’m looking to keep improving, keep playing at this level and hopefully qualify for London. Things are looking better for me, I have my chances. But there are two big events next week (500 tournaments Basel and Valencia) coming up. everyone has a chance to improve his point totals,” said del Potro, who won after a month away with a left wrist injury.
Slovenian Zemlja, ranked 70th, had already set several personal bests during his unexpected run this week, beating Tommy Haas for a first top 20 win, reaching the final over Janko Tipsarevic for a first top 10 victory and raising his level consistently throughout the best week of his career.
del Potro added Vienna to trophies claimed this season in Marseille and Estoril. He now owns 12 titles from 17 finals.
