With the race to London heating up with just two more weeks of regular season play remaining on the ATP, contender Janko Tipsarevic is doing his best to keep his mind in the present. The Serb stands provisional ninth for the eight-man World Tour Finals in London from November 5.
There are three spots remaining – but likely four if injured Rafael Nadal does not show up. “I would lie If I said I was not thinking about London,” said Tipsarevic, playing as second seed in the just-concluded Vienna event. “It is in the back of my mind,
“But this is an important tournament for me. I’m trying not to think too far ahead. Doing so only created added pressure which is not helpful. I’m only thinking about my next match – I”m trying not to care about London right now.”
Tipsarevic is chased by rivals including Frenchman Richard Gasquet and trails provisional sixth Tomas Berdych, No. 7 – and Vienna top seed – Juan Martin del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Serb, a top 10 regular for a year, says maintaining focus is his biggest challenge in the closing week of the sprint.
“I try not to think of anything before me or behind me,” he said of the race in which he has a 400-point cushion against a pack of trailing rivals. I cannot be affected by the fact that everyone is chasing me. All I can do is stay completely focused on every point of every match. I cannot think about being ahead or behind.”
