Moscow

Singles – Semifinal: (1) Samantha Stosur def. (4) Ana Ivanovic 2-6 6-3 6-2

Samantha Stosur will be only an alternate in Istanbul, but it’s looking as if she will be ready to step in if the chance arises! She is now only 330 points behind #8 Sara Errani. She can’t make it to #8 this week, but Istanbul could change that. Ana Ivanovic leaves Moscow at #12, but with the Bali/Sofia title coming off — and she won’t be there to defend. So she might fall to #13. It will depend on what, if anything, Nadia Petrova does in Sofia.

Singles – Semifinal: (3/WC) Caroline Wozniacki def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 6-7(4-7) 6-4

If Caroline Wozniacki had played like this all year, she might still be Top Ten…. It’s only her third final of the season, and she’ll be #10 if she can win it. Even if she loses, this takes her close enough to #10 Marion Bartoli that Wozniacki might have a chance to move up at Sofia. Sofia Arvidsson will end up just below the Top Forty.

Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Kirilenko/Petrova def. Kops-Jones/Spears 7-5 6-4

Kirilenko/Petrova were up an early break in the first set, lost it, but then took control from 5-5. Which means that the Istanbul field is set: Kirilenko/Petrova get the final spots; Kops-Jones/Spears will be the alternates. And there isn’t much need for alternates in Istanbul, since there are only three matches played….

The locals will certainly be happy — we have four Russians in the doubles final.

Luxembourg

Singles – Semifinal: Monica Niculescu def. Daniela Hantuchova 6-1 6-3

Amazing. Monica Niculescu has been struggling to rediscover her form, and has fallen some forty places in the last few months. She picked a very good time to get her game back, since she was defending finalist points this week. This will let her stay in the #70 range — and, obviously, go into the off season on a high note. She leaves Daniela Hantuchova still below the Top Thirty.

Singles – Semifinal: Venus Williams def. Andrea Petkovic 5-7 6-4 6-4

So close for Andrea Petkovic…. But it’s Venus Williams who is in the final — and in the Top Thirty. We show her at #26. Her Australian Open seed now looks sure.
